Back rank weakness

Trapped by your own pawns

The idea

A king on its starting rank with the three pawns in front unmoved is in danger. If you can get a rook or queen onto that rank, the king has nowhere to escape — checkmate. The fix: push one of the pawns (h3 or g3 for White) to give the king a 'luft' (breathing room).
