The idea

Each piece has an approximate point value. Use it to judge trades: Pawn 1, Knight 3, Bishop 3, Rook 5, Queen 9, King ∞. Trading a knight for a rook is +2 ("winning the exchange"). Trading a rook for a knight is −2. But values are guidelines, not laws — a great knight can outshine a stuck rook.
