Algebraic notation

Reading and writing chess

The idea

Modern chess uses algebraic notation. Each piece has a letter: K (king), Q (queen), R (rook), B (bishop), N (knight). Pawns get no letter. A move is the piece letter + destination square: Nf3 means "knight to f3". Captures use 'x': Bxe5. Check is +, checkmate is #. Castling is O-O (kingside) or O-O-O (queenside).
