Stalemate & draws
Not winning, not losing
The idea
If the player to move has NO legal moves AND is NOT in check, it's stalemate — a draw. This catches more games than you'd think; it's a common way for a winning side to throw away a victory. Other draws: insufficient material (just two kings, K+B vs K, K+N vs K), threefold repetition, the 50-move rule, or mutual agreement.
