The Queen
Rook + Bishop in one piece
The idea
The queen combines the rook's straight lines with the bishop's diagonals — she moves in any direction, any number of squares. She's the most powerful piece on the board (worth about 9 pawns). But power comes with risk: bring her out too early and the opponent will harass her with cheaper pieces, costing you tempo.
