Knights
The L-shaped jumper
The idea
The knight moves in an L: two squares in one direction (rank or file), then one square perpendicular. It's the only piece that can jump over other pieces — friend or foe. A knight in the center reaches up to 8 squares; in the corner, only 2. "A knight on the rim is dim" — keep them central.
