King activity in the endgame

From hidden to hero

The idea

In the opening and middlegame, the king hides for safety. In the endgame — once most pieces are off the board — the king becomes a fighting piece. He's worth roughly a minor piece (3-4 points of activity) and should march toward the center to support pawns and attack enemy weaknesses. An active king is often the difference in a winning endgame.
