A stuck piece is no piece
The idea
A bishop blocked by its own pawns might as well be off the board. A knight on the rim does almost nothing. Being a pawn up doesn't matter if your pieces are gathering dust. When evaluating a position, ask: who has active pieces? Whose pieces are coordinated? Often activity is worth more than the material count.
